New York Yankees Rumors: Yankees Interested In Cuban Outfielder?

facebooktwitterreddit

We’ve seen them go after guys like Yasmany Tomas, Yoan Moncada and Rusney Castillo and didn’t sign him. Yes, the New York Yankees spent a bunch internationally last year on prospects, but haven’t been in the game lately. Maybe they are jumping in again?

"My bad: Yankees’ spending restrictions start July 2, so they could go full freight on Martinez. Cubs back open for int’l business on July 2.— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) May 16, 2015"

Here’s what MLB.com has on Martinez.

"Martinez, who trained with the International Prospect League in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, will work out for scouts Wednesday and Thursday. It’s unclear if the outfielder, who played two seasons for Las Tunas in Cuba, will sign during the current international signing period or wait until the next period that begins on July 2."

If they act fast and sign him he can add to a group that includes Aaron Judge, Jake Cave, Slade Heathcott and others. Would the Yankees have a crowded outfield in the minors? Sure? But since when is depth a bad thing? Anytime you think you have too much of something, you don’t. It could give the Yankees a trade chip to move for something else.

I’ll admit I haven’t seen the guy play, but if the Yankees are interested and their restrictions start on July 2nd, why not add what you can before it starts?
