Yankees News: Mark Teixeira AL Player Of The Week

Mark Teixeira has been a notorious slow starter. He’s struggled all throughout early parts of the season in the past. His career average in March and April is .238. He’s healthy for the first time in a couple of seasons and even though his average isn’t the highest, he’s put up power numbers. Tex was rewarded by being named American League Player Of The Week.

Tex last week hit .333 with five homers and 10 RBI as the Yankees had a 5-2 week. Teixeira had a slugging percentage of 1.000 which was tops in baseball for the week. He’s won the award five other times in his career.

His eight homers this month are his best ever for April.

One of the keys for the Yankees coming into this season was the health of Teixeira. Can he stay healthy and provide pop all season long. With all the lefties the Yankees have, having that switch-hitter power bat in the middle of the lineup is important. Chase Headley isn’t a big power guy and Carlos Beltran just looks lost right now.

Can Tex keep this power up? That remains to be seen. However, it is a good sign that his power is there. He’s never going to hit .290 again, but that’s okay. If he hits .250 with close to 30 homers and 90 RBI the Yankees will certainly take that. He’s important on offense and on defense.

Congrats to Teixeira on the award.
