Yankees News: Jose Pirela Set to Begin Rehab Assignment

After two extended spring games, New York Yankees middle-infield prospect Jose Pirela finally resumed baseball activity on Sunday when he played the first actual game of his injury rehab assignment at Class A Tampa. Pirela had been sidelined since the tail end of spring training when he was diagnosed with a concussion after crashing into the outfield wall while chasing down a fly ball.

With the platoon of Stephen Drew and Gregorio Petit just barely getting the Yankees by at second-base in terms of offensive production, Didi Gregorius still trying to find his footing in the Bronx over at short stop and Rob Refsnyder only hitting .217 down in AAA, it’s safe to assume that Jose Pirela is the next best option at second base for the New York Yankees, making his recovery significantly crucial.

Obviously the Yankees plan is to slowly ease Pirela back into baseball during this assignment, which is probably why he debuted as the designated hitter and batted second on Sunday. He went 0-for-4 with a run scored and grounded into three double plays.

Jose Pirela will be in action again on Monday when the Tampa Yankees square off against Clearwater at 7:05 pm.
