This weekend’s Subway Series has a unique feel to it. Entering Friday night’s game, both teams entered the night in first place in their respective divisions. The New York Mets came into the Bronx on a 11-game winning streak, tied for the longest in their franchise history, and had one of their best pitchers in Jacob deGrom on the mound. However, that didn’t stop the New York Yankees from hitting three home runs against deGrom in a 6-1 win over the Mets. Those three homers now give the Yankees 24 home runs for the season.

The scoring began in the bottom of the first inning for the Yankees. With Brett Gardner on first and one out, Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer to right field to give the Bronx Bombers an early 2-0 lead. It was the sixth home run of the season for Teixeira.

The home runs would not stop there. In the bottom of the third inning, Jacoby Ellsbury led off with a solo home run to right. His first of the season gave New York a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning, with Alex Rodriguez on first and one out, Teixeira would hit another two-run homer to right. It was his second home run of the game and seventh of the season that made the score 5-0. The scoring would conclde in the third inning when Stephen Drew hit a sac fly to center field with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 6-0.

It was a rough night for deGrom, who had only given up two earned runs in his first three starts coming into the night. He went five innings, gave up six runs on eight hits, struck out two, and walked two to drop to 2-2 on the year.

As for Michael Pineda, he brought his A game to the park tonight. He retired the first eight Mets he faced before Kirk Nieuwenhuis tapped a ball past Chase Headley at third base for a double. New York did get a run against Pineda in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Lucas Duda. Nevertheless, the Mets had a tough time catching up to Pineda’s slider tonight.

Pineda, who improved to 3-0 on the season, went 7.2 innings, gave up one run on five hits, struck out seven Mets, and did not walk a single batter on 100 pitches. Chasen Shreve would come in during the eighth inning with Granderson on second and two outs to face Juan Lagares, who he would strike out. Shreve would finish the game by throwing a scoreless ninth inning.

With the win, the Yankees have now won four straight games and seven of their last eight to improve to 10-7 on the season.

Next Game: The Yankees will be back in action tomorrow afternoon against the New York Mets (13-4) at 4:05 PM ET on PIX11 or Fox Sports 1. CC Sabathia (0-3, 4.35) will get the start for the Yankees against Matt Harvey (3-0, 3.50).
