Yankees News: Brendan Ryan on the Mend

facebooktwitterreddit

New York Yankees infield utility man Brendan Ryan is reportedly fielding ground balls and took some light batting practice on Tuesday, as per the New York Daily News. Ryan, who injured his calf during the tail-end of Spring Training has yet to play a game this season. In 2014, the 33-year old batted .167 with eight RBI in 114 at-bats in 2014 with the New York Yankees.

Ryan was expected to back up shortstop Didi Gregorius, as well as Stephen Drew at second base to start the 2015 season, but his late injury forced Brian Cashman to go out and acquire Gregorio Petit from the Houston Astros to provide infield depth off the Yankees bench.

Though Ryan isn’t much of a hitter, with a career average of .234, there are few defensive shortstops as talented as Ryan in the league. Didi Gregorius should be one those shortstops with as much talent as Ryan, if not more, but he hasn’t shown any signs of this to date.

With Ryan set to return in the coming days, it’ll be interesting to see what happens with the Yankees roster. The obvious move is to part ways with Gregorio Petit, who’s batting just 1.50 through 20 at-bats with the New York Yankees, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
