Former Yankee Shane Greene Puts More Pressure on Didi Gregorius

This off-season Shane Greene was part of a three team trade, which sent him to Detroit. The Yankees in the deal got a shortstop in Didi Gregarius. The first two weeks in the season it looks like the Yankees have received the raw end of the deal, with Greene having a great start to the season.

The hot start from Shane Greene, and slow start from Didi has people asking why did the Yankees make this trade. Joe Girardi talked about how difficult it was trading Greene.

"Any time you let a young starting pitcher go, I think it’s difficult, But to get an everyday shortstop, those don’t just fall out of trees. To get something, you have to give up something."

Girardi has a great point, talking about these two young players. Right now baseball has a shortage of great shortstops. When people discuss who the best shortstop is in baseball people have a very hard time figuring it out, (I think it is Troy Tulowitzki, but could be wrong) but the Yankees took a risk with a young shortstop in Didi. Greene value was not any higher than it was in the offseason, and the Yankees rolled the dice.

When you look at the Yankees pitching rotation they have lots of rotation depth. Shane Greene would be nothing more than the fifth starter or a spot starter  in the Yankee rotation, when the Yankee rotation is fully healthy. Trading Greene gives him a better opportunity, and start every fifth day. The Yankees get a young shortstop that is still growing.

Shane Greene’s hot start has put more pressure on  Gregorius, if that was even possible. If you think it is fair or not, these two will be compared to evaluate who won the trade.

Hopefully by mid-May, Didi Gregorius is hitting the ball well and the comparison be more favorable for the Yankees.
