Yankees Editorial: Checking Up on the Injured Chris Capuano

Just over a month ago right-handed pitcher Chris Capuano suffered a lower-body injury during a spring training exhibition game while covering first base on a ground ball. Capuano has since been on the road to recovery, and if all goes according to plan, he’ll be joining the Yankees rotation within the next several weeks.

According to Ryan Hatch of NJ.com the right-handed veteran is set to throw a few bullpen sessions as well as live batting practices at George M. Steinbrenner Field down in Tampa as early as this week. Skipper Joe Girardi said he expects to have Capuano back within the month of May.

The Yankees will need all the arms they can get due to their tough schedule in May, as the Bombers will play 17 straight days of baseball starting on May 1st, and then another 13 straight games between May 22nd and June 7th.

"“He’ll probably throw a batting practice or two, and then start some games,” Girardi said of Capuano. “Could you think about a month, maybe, after this five-day period? Let that clear because then you have to go two innings, three, four innings, that sort of thing.”"

Fast forwarding a bit, the return of Chris Capuano will put the Yankees in a pretty interesting position. Should Adam Warren continue to throw relatively well and build off his impressive first start, does Girardi automatically demote him back to the bullpen? If the bullpen continues to struggle that may be a viable option, but if they start dominating again like they had in the first week of the season, I’m not sure there’s even room for Warren.
