Yankee Editorial: What Monday’s Victory Could Mean For The Yankees

Going into Sunday Night Baseball The New York Yankees were 1-4 and the roof was falling in on the early season. Then the Yankees crushed their arch rival (Boston Red Sox), and started a mini road trip in Baltimore.

That game Monday against Baltimore was just what the Yankees needed. The Yankees were down 4-2 when Stephen Drew (Yes Stephen Drew that’s not a typo) hit a pinch hit grand slam to take the lead 6-4. Then the Yankee bullpen was able to finish the game, and get a hard-fought win.

Last year the Yankees had a record of 6-13 against the Baltimore Orioles, the worst record against any opponent of last year. If you took them out of the equation last year the Yankees would have been 78-65 with a winning percentage of .545. Compare that winning percentage to the Oakland A’s, (.543) who were the second wild card, and the Yankees would have been in the playoffs.

The easiest way to win the division is to beat the teams in your division. Last year the Baltimore Orioles feasted on the AL East, and won the division by 12 games, and the team in second was The Yankees.

Joe Girardi has been impressed this year with how resilient the team has been this year. This team keeps coming back, like when Rocky keeps getting beat up but always gets back up. Even in spring training they had late inning heroics.

It is early in the season, but the Yankees seem to me at least that they are not going to go down easily. This can only help the team, and maybe win enough of these close games that they will make it the playoffs for the first time since 2012.

Even with the loss last night, with this bullpen the Yankees have assembled, if the starting pitching can keep the team in the game, this Yankee team can make it back to October baseball.
