Yankee Recap: Yankees Lose in an Instant Classic with Red Sox

It is early in the season, but the excitement is still there when the Yankees play the Red Sox for the first time in the new season. Since it is a Yankee/Red Sox game of course it goes over SEVEN hours.  There was even a delay in the 12th when some lights went out.

Nathan Eovaldi made his first career start as a Yankee, and went up against Wade Miley who makes his debut for the Red Sox. Chase Headley crushed a ball in the ninth with two outs to tie the game and send it to extra innings, and taking both the starters out of the equation for a win or a lost.

Eovaldi went 5 1/3, giving up 3 runs, while walking one, striking out one, and giving up eight hits. His fastball has some serious velocity, hitting 101 mph in the first inning. When he was taking out his fastball were still in the mid to upper 90s. The problem today was his breaking pitches. Eovaldi off speed pitches were not biting, and the sox were hitting him pretty had. If Eovaldi’s breaking pitches start moving more, he can become one of the most exciting pitchers in all of baseball.

Chase Headley continues to be Mr. Clutch for the Yankees. With 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth he hits a BOMB to tie the game and send it to extra innings. The rest of the Yankees offense continues to horrify Yankee fans. The 7-8-9 hitters that started the game for the Yankees were 1 for 11 striking out multiple times and walking once. When these hitters are coming up it is almost an automatic out, and when a third of your line up cannot hit it is very tough to win any baseball game, let alone one against the arch rival Red Sox.

Finally, David Ortiz breaks the tie in the 16th with a home run. Mark Teixeira then answers him back to tie it back up with a solo home run of his own. Pablo Sandoval took the lead back in the 18th with a base hit up the middle. Of course the Yankees tied it with a RBI double from Carlos Beltran. Then in the top of the 19th Mookie Betts hit a sacrifice fly to take back the lead, and would hold the lead 6-5.

The Yankees lose a heart breaker 6-5 in 19 innings. Game 2 of the series starts at 1:05 on Saturday, with Adam Warren getting the start for the Yankees.
