Yankees Game Recap: Tanaka and Offense Struggle In Loss

Well, this is not how you want to start the season. The offense struggled. The defense struggled. Masahiro Tanaka struggled. It’s a game where you want to hit the reset button on your Playstation. Brett Gardner‘s solo homer was the offense as the Yankees fell 6-1 to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Tanaka got threw the first two innings unscathed, but the third inning caused the wheels to fall of the bus. Kevin Pillar singled off Chase Headley‘s glove. Devon Travis walked. Jose Reyes dropped a game changing bunt that Headley threw away and allowed a run to score. Ex-Yankee Russell Martin drove in two with a single. Two batters later, Edwin Encarnacion hit his first homer of the year to make it 5-0.
Travis hit his first major league homer off Chasen Shreve to make it 6-1.
The Yankees staged a rally in the eighth when Didi Gregorius was hit by a pitch and Carlos Beltran walked, but with Mark Teixeira up, Gregorius tried to steal third when the Blue Jays have the shift on and was caught.
Alex Rodriguez, in his first game back since September 2013, went 1-3 with a walk. Chris Martin, Shreve, David Carpenter and Justin Wilson made their debuts out of the bullpen, with only Shreve giving up a run.
Wednesday night, Michael Pineda will face R.A. Dickey at 7:05.
