Yankees News: Girardi to Rotate Closers
As soon as pitchers and catchers reported to George Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fl. back in February, the first question on everyone’s mind was who would be the next closer of the New York Yankees. Three days away from opening day in the Bronx, and the same question remains with no clear answer.
According to Wallace Matthews of ESPN New York, Yankees skipper Joe Girardi officially announced that the Yankees will begin the 2015 season without a set closer.
Instead, as I hinted towards last night on our season preview show (recap up later today), the Yankees will split the ninth-inning duties based on match ups and in-game situations between last seasons set-up man Dellin Betances and the newly acquired southpaw Andrew Miller
This is a very interesting approach, but to be completely honest, I’m not surprised at all. Ever since making his managerial debut in 2006 with the Miami Marlins, Joe Girardi has historically been the type of manager to dissect match ups and mix and match his roster to always try and put the best team out on the field to win.
