New York Yankees Recap: Brendan Ryan Injured In 3-0 Loss To Tampa Bay Rays
By Ricky Keeler
With Opening Day coming up in a few days, the New York Yankees saw Jacoby Ellsbury back in the lineup down in Tampa as the Bronx Bombers took on the Tampa Bay Rays. It was the center fielder’™s first spring game since March 15 against the Phillies. He has been out since that game due to an oblique injury. However, in New York’™s 3-0 loss to Tampa, they had another injury occur to one of their infielders.
In the top of the sixth inning, Brendan Ryan misplayed a ground ball by Kevin Kiermaier that allowed two runners to score and gave the Rays a 3-0 lead at the time. Ryan would leave the game with the help of trainers due to a leg injury. Sweeney Murti reported that Ryan has a right calf strain:
Now, Joe Girardi gave an update during the game on Didi Gregorius‘ wrist injury and he said, if all goes well, Gregorius will be in the lineup in one of the split squad games down in Lakeland on Thursday. Here’s another tweet from Murti:
The Yankees sent Chase Whitley to the mound on Wednesday as he tried to win one of the final spots in the bullpen. All in all, Whitley pitched well. He went four innings, gave up one run on four hits, struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Tampa’™s lone run against Whitley came in the top of the second inning. After a Desmond Jennings leadoff double to deep center field, James Loney would drive him in with a RBI single to right. Loney went 3-for-3 with a double on the afternoon.
After Whitley’s day was over, it was Esmil Rogers‘ turn to take the mound. He would go 1.1 innings, give up one unearned run on two hits, and strike out three batters. It was a good day for Yankees pitchers as the combination of Whitley, Rogers, lefty Chasen Shreve, Andrew Bailey, and Nick Rumbelow combined to strike out 14 Rays hitters.
As for the offense, New York managed only three hits against a combination of Rays pitchers led by Jordan Norberto. Those four hits were singles by Brett Gardner, Carlos Beltran, Mark Teixeira, and Ramon Flores.
New York did try to rally in the ninth inning. Flores led off the inning with the aforementioned single and John Ryan Murphy drew a walk to put runners on first and second with one out. While Cole Figueroa would move the runners over, Austin Romine would pop up to shallow left field to end the game.
The Yankees will be back in action on Thursday with their final split squad day of the spring season. One squad will play the Tigers down in Lakeland at 1:05 PM ET on ESPN with Bryan Mitchell pitching for the Bronx Bombers. The other squad will host the Pittsburgh Pirates and have Michael Pineda take the mound in his final start of the spring. You can catch that game at 1:05 PM as well on the YES Network.
