Yankees News: Didi Gregorius Sprains Left Wrist- X-Rays Negative
Yesterday, the New York Yankees took on the Baltimore Orioles at George M. Steinbrenner field. During the second inning Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius tried diving for a grounder through the gap. He then rolled over his wrist trying to brace the impact on the dive, hitting the ground causing him to slightly sprain it. Yankees manager Joe Girardi, trainers, and players then rushed over to see what happened.
The injury was to his left wrist, some decent news was the x-rays coming back as negative, also not showing any damage. Didi stayed in the game for two innings, then leaving before the fifth. He was supposed to have the next two days off as it is, but now it appears he will be out a little longer. You never want an injury (especially on this team), but for this to happen in the closing days of Spring Training, it’s even more unfortunate. Whether it’s serious or not, it’s the time of Spring where starters just want the regular season to start, no set backs.
Joe Girardi plans to have him back by Wednesday, giving him an extra day off. Didi spoke on the play after x-rays came back. “I had to roll with it, otherwise I think it would’ve snapped or something. It was fine after that.”
For now it seems like a minor injury, but if it carries on (and lets hope it doesn’t), the Yankees have Brendan Ryan to take his place. Ryan has more time at shortstop, with Stephen Drew being at second all Spring. However if all goes as planned, Didi is positive it won’t have an affect on his first Opening Day as a Yankee.
While it’s unfortunate that this happened so late into the Spring, it’s also can be a positive. Didi is the starting shortstop, he isn’t in a competition for his position. There is no rush for him to play before the start of the season, meaning if the three days isn’t enough, it shouldn’t be a problem. Joe Girardi is a master at handling injuries, Didi should be back for the last week of Spring Training, everyone can breathe.
