Yankees Editorial: Is the Alex Rodriguez First Base Experiment Over?

It seems as if the Alex Rodriguez experiment at first base is all but over.

Prior to Tuesday nights exhibition game v. the Toronto Blue Jays, Yankees skipper Joe Girardi sounded very un-enthusiastic about the whole idea when he was talking about it with certain members of the media.

According to Brendan Kuty of NJ.com, Girardi said he had originally “toyed around” with giving Alex Rodriguez a start at first base for the first time in his professional career in an exhibition game sometime this week, but later ruled against it.

“I’m not sure I’ll do it after just kind of talking about it, we have Garrett Jones that’s very capable of playing there,” Girardi told Kuty.

Early on in Spring Training, the Yankees announced that they planned for the 39-year old Rodriguez to possibly back up first baseman Mark Teixeira, who’s suffered his fair share of injuries over the past few seasons and has enough troubles of his own when it comes to staying healthy and on the field.

However, in my opinion, and as Girardi was alluding to, Garrett Jones will be a much more serviceable option at backing up the injury-prone Texeira. After all, Jones has played a total of 458 games at first-base over the first seven years in his career as opposed to zero for Alex Rodriguez.

In fact, A-Rod had never even owned a first baseman’s mitt before this spring, as Kuty reported that he had the team clubhouse manager buy one for him.
