Yankees Game Recap: Sabathia Survives First Start In Loss

If the Yankees are going to compete this year, CC Sabathia is going to have to be a part of it. The lefty isn’t what he once was, but if he can be effective, it’ll be okay. Sabathia made his first start of the spring today. To me, I wanted to see his velocity and how he looked planting on his surgically repaired knee. Sabathia hit 96 at one point on the gun, and even sat at 92 MPH quite often, but his location was his downfall in the second as the Yankees lost to the Blue Jays 4-2.

Sabathia got the Jays in order in the first, but struggled in the second. Dioner Navarro singled to lead off the inning. Sabathia was able to get the next two hitters, but Dayan Viciedo took a  pitch that was left up and got a double in right center field. Devon Travis singled in Viciedo to make it 2-o. Josh Thole doubled to left, but Travis was thrown out at the plate on a great throw by Didi Gregorius to end the inning.

The Yankees got one of those runs back in the bottom half of Drew Hutchinson. Garrett Jones walked. Chris Young and Stephen Drew followed with singles to make it 2-1.

The Jays got a run off Dellin Betances in the third. Jose Reyes tripled on a shot to right center that almost left the yard and scored on Josh Donaldson‘s groundout.

Mark Teixeira hit his first homer of the spring in the fourth to again make it a one run game.

Kyle Davies came in in the fifth and Reyes would start a rally again with a single. He then stole second and went to third on a throwing error by Brian McCann. Two batters later, Reyes would score on Jose Bautista‘s groundout.

Masahiro Tanaka makes his second start of the spring tomorrow at 6:05 against the Braves.
