Yankees Recap: Young Talent Shines In First Game

March 3rd marked the kick off the of the spring league for the New York Yankees. With a majority of the 40 man roster playing Wednesday, Tuesday we saw a team mainly consisting of Non-Roster Invitees. With the exceptions of Jacoby Ellsbury, Brett Gardner, Adam Warren, and Chris Young, we were able to see the young up and coming stars get their cleats dirty for the first time in 2015.

In the top of the 1st inning Ellbury and Gardner both grounded out to start the game off. Chris Young proved that Iron Mike wouldn’t get the best of him and singled to right. Product of the Yankees Marlins trade this off-season, Garrett Jones got his first at-bat of the spring for the Yanks and singled as well. With runners on the corners the man battling Stephen Drew for the second base position came on, Jose Pirela. He’d single to right as well for an RBI, sending Chris Young in. Young, Pirela, and Jones would go 1-2 on the day with a single and ground out.

Adam Warren started off the game for the Yanks, he pitched two innings and only gave up one hit. Warren is currently in contention for the Yankees fifth or even sixth rotation spot (if they choose to go in that direction). He looked comfortable, and with reports this spring sounding similar to what he showed Tuesday it was no surprise. He’s feeling confident in himself to move up to be a starter this season.

After Warren left the game in a 1-0 score, a big name, this off-season Luis Severino came in . His first inning of the spring included a strikeout looking, a strikeout swinging, and then a broken bat ground out. However the next inning  he seemed to struggle just a little. Joe Girardi took him out after he let the bases get loaded however, hitters were not getting anything easy on him. A single just out of reach of the diving Nick Noonan, and a blooper that fell just in front of Gardner (for what it’s worth he could’ve easily dove and caught it if he wanted).

Despite him struggling a little, I liked what I saw from Severino. The fastball was as consistent as we’ve heard, he struggled to keep some balls down in that 4th where he slipped up a little though.

After Severino left the bases loaded Diego Moreno came on for a 1.2 IP, 0 hits, and a run on a Balk.

That bats for the Yankees didn’t show up until the 9th when they were down 5-1. A comeback filled completely with the power of the future. With only Mason Williams on and two out, Jake Cave a player seen with the versatility similar to Brett Gardner chops a grounder to 2nd. He’ll make it safe and with an RBI, 5-2. Next up Slade Heathcott singles, which puts him and Jake Cave on 1st and 2nd. Then 6 ft 7 in Aaron Judge walks up to the plate, points to center field, and- okay, not exactly.

Seriously though, even if it was a spring training game, Yankees fans eyes’ widened everywhere. Fan favorite, Aaron Judge hits one deep to center and ties it in the top of the 9th. It’s almost as if you played the scenario out in your head, under the lights, in the Bronx.

While it’s only a Spring Training game, and the first one of 2015 at that, there’s always something to like from what you see. Young talent shining for the Yankees is something that hasn’t happened a lot in recent years, and if it did it was traded away. With far more to happen this month,

I’m excited to see which young players put their name in serious contention to make this team in 2015.
