Yankees Minor League News: One Suspension; One Addition

A little bit of news on the Yankees minor league front over the past few days. Let’s delve right in and see what’s going on.

On the addition front, the Yankees added some more catching depth by adding former Padres catcher Eddy Rodriguez to a minor league deal according to Baseball America’s Matt Eddy. The 29 year old Cuban was in the Tampa Bay Rays organization last season. At AAA Durham, Rodriguez had a .152 average with a .443 OPS in 13 games.

Rodriguez is going to be a body that helps back up in the minors. He can help at AAA, possibly as Gary Sanchez‘s backup. If Austin Romine doesn’t make the team this season and is lost on waivers, Rodriguez can be there to help fill the void.

On the suspension front, Yankees infielder Tyler Palmer was suspended 50 games for testing positive for amphetamines. He also tested positive for a drug of abuse as well.

The 22 year old infielder played in the Gulf Coast League last season. He hit .262 with a .797 OPS and stole 17 bases.

Palmer was a fourth round pick of the Marlins back in 2011. Palmer was going to sign, but suffered an accident where he severed two nerves in his throwing arm.  Palmer was playing Community College ball with the Sanford River Rats before inking a minor league deal with the Yankees last season.

Hopefully Palmer plays well when he gets back and Rodriguez can provide some catching depth and experience in the minors.
