Yankees Rumors: Interest In Johan Santana?

Back in 2008, the question was not if but when the Yankees would make a deal with the Twins for Johan Santana. The Yankees didn’t want to give up Phil Hughes. Santana ended up going to the Mets. The Yankees kept Hughes, added CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett in 2009 and won a ring. Could Johan finally become a Yankee now?

Santana tried to come back from injury last year signing with the Baltimore Orioles, but blew his Achilles tendon trying to come back. Santana threw in a game for the first time since the injury in the Venezuelan Winter League and went two innings, getting all six batters out.

According to Dan Martin of the NY Post, the Yankees were one of the teams there and will continue to monitor Santana’s progress.

Santana hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2012 with the Mets.

If Santana is healthy enough, there is no reason why the Yankees shouldn’t give this guy a look. The Yankees need some extra depth in the rotation. Ivan Nova can’t be totally counted on to come back 100%. The Yankees have some younger pitchers like Bryan Mitchell that could use some veteran guidance at AAA.

Santana is clearly a hard worker and go show the young guns the Yankees have coming up a thing or two. Heck he could even help guys like CC Sabathia too. It’s a low-risk high-reward signing. They should jump on it.
