C.C. Sabathia Focusing On Health In 2015

One of the biggest signings in 2009 for the New York Yankees was C.C. Sabathia, joining the Bombers on an 8-year, $182 million deal. He would go on to be their reliable work horse of an ace in that championship season. Sabathia logged 230 innings and finished the season 19-8. His 197 strikeouts and  3.37 ERA that season helped him finish 4th in Cy Young voting. Sabathia would continue to log over 200 innings for the next four seasons, proving that he was well worth the Yankees’ investment. However, in the recent seasons, we have watched his health decline and the effectiveness of his stuff diminish. One has to wonder if the insane workloads have finally caught up to him.

One of the biggest concerns for Sabathia in 2015, besides his fastball, is the status of his surgically-repaired knee. He struggled in 46 innings with an atrocious 5.28 ERA in 2014. He eventually was lost for the season because of a knee injury which required surgery. In an interview with YES network earlier this month, Sabathia answered questions about his knee.

“It feels good. For me, I have no complaints. I’m able to do all of my workouts, play catch and do everything. So I’m excited about how it feels,” The Yankees can only hold their breath and hope he stays healthy and active. However, Sabathia’s work ethic has never been in question, and he even addressed his motivation to return this year. “I’ve been doing everything I can to stay active,” he said. “I’ve been working out, playing catch. I’ll just continue to do that all off-season and be ready to go.”

If the Yankees want to compete in 2015, they need their rotation to hold up and avoid any serious health setbacks. Sabathia will be a key to success like he has been in the past. As fans, we can only hope that his knee is as good as it sounds.
