Yankees To Pay For Slain NYPD Officer’s Children’s Education

By now, everyone is well aware of the tragedy that took place Saturday, as a lone gunman murdered two of New York City’s finest as they sat in their patrol car. The gunman later turned the gun on himself. Sunday, the New York Yankees, determined to make a difference in light of of the shocking event, through their Silver Shield Foundation, will pay for the education of two of Officer Rafael Ramos’ children.

The two children of the fallen Ramos, are of college age and 13-years-old respectively. The Yankees’ late owner, George Steinbrenner, established the Silver Shield Foundation in 1982. The foundation was established to cover the costs of education for fallen police officers and firefighters who perish in the line of duty. The second slain officer, Wenjian Liu, did not have any children. Aside from educational costs, the Silver Shield Foundation covers counseling, tutoring, and college preparation services, vocational and trade school costs.
