Will We See Refsnyder?

Now that the Yankees have brought back Chase Headley on a four-year deal worth up to $52 million, the entire infield has been shuffled. Martin Prado, who was assumed to be the third baseman, will now be shifted back to second base and Headley will be slotted in at third. So now, as of today, the new infield will be: Headley at third, Didi Gregorius at short, Prado at second, and Mark Teixeira at first. It is not the most eye-popping lineup, but it is definitely a better looking one than yesterday. However, now that Prado is back at second, the Yankee universe has to wonder what will happen to the much-anticipated debut of Robert Refsnyder?

Refsnyder gained a lot of attention last season as he raked his way through the farm. His hot bat had fans crying to see him in the show especially considering the catastrophe that was second base in 2014. The 23-year-old displayed his talents through 60 games in Double-A in which he batted .342 with a .542 slugging percentage. His six home runs, 30 RBIs, and 5 stolen bases were enough to impress the front office and to convince them to promote him to Triple-A. In his time in Triple-A, Refsnyder did not disappoint. He continued his hot hitting and batted .300 with a .456 slugging percentage. Futhermore, Refsnyder demonstrated his eye at the plate in drawing 41 walks in 77 games. His glove is also an impressive attribute, as he only had 12 errors in 122 games in 2014. He also boasted an impressive 4.23 RF/G with 214 put outs and 302 assists. In the major leagues the leading RF/G was Jason Heyward‘s 2.51.

It is no secret as to why the Yankee universe is excited to see Refsnyder. He can be our next big name, home grown talent and the beginning to the revamped farm system we have been hearing about. However, the signing of Headley isn’t necessarily the end to his beginning. There are major health concerns with the roster and almost any injury will create a roster spot for Ref. The lineups will be shuffled and he will receive his opportunity to prove himself. Girardi is a good manager and won’t hide someone who can provide an immediate impact both offensively and defensively. I am certain that halfway through the 2015 season, the Bleacher Creatures will be chanting, “Rob-ert Ref-snyder!”
