UPDATE: According to Ken Rosenthal, this deal is now complete and Gregorius is a Yankee.

Reports have just come in from WFAN’s Sweeny Murti that the Yankees are working with both the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Detroit Tigers on a 3-way trade that would see pitcher Shane Greene go to Detroit and the Yankees landing shortstop Didi Gregorius from Arizona.

Gregorius is still a young player at 24. Last season he hit .226 with a .290 OBP in 80 games. Obviously, the Yankees are looking for a replacement now that Derek Jeter has officially retired. Gregorius looks to now be filling that spot if the deal is completed. While the offensive numbers are not eye opening, he did hit .252 with a .332 OBP through 103 games in 2013. Additionally, his glove would be an upgrade at the position. At his age, he could bring his raw pieces together in the Yankee lineup.

Shane Greene was mostly successful in the Bronx last season. In his first year of major league action, Greene posted a 3.78 ERA while starting 14 games for the often injured club. He had a high WHIP at 1.398, but also had a 9.3 SO9 average. Greene stepped into a role that many may have thought he was not ready for and was more than serviceable. He is not arbitration eligible until 2018, so the Yankees definitely sold high on his arm and value.

The Yankees may not be done at shortstop, even if they are able to land Gregorius. They have been considered the favorite to land Yoan Moncada, the 19 year old shortstop phenom when he is available to be signed. Moncada would still be a few years away from the major league level, so grabbing Gregorius is a great move. He is under team control through the 2019 season and still has one more year before he is eligible for arbitration.

Also as part of the trade, the Tigers would reportedly be sending two pitchers to Arizona. The Yankees and Diamondbacks have been frequent trade partners recently. In the 2014 season, the Yankees acquired both Brandon McCarthy and Martin Prado from Arizona in separate trades.

Gregorius is not a flashy name like Troy Tulowitzki, but the Yankees have taken a step forward to secure the 2015 infield with this potential move.
