Bomber Bites- Yankees Should Sign Either Medlen or Beachy

Yesterday was the non-tender deadline for players who were arbitration eligible and one of the more surprising moves was by the Atlanta Braves non-tendering Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy. Yes both are coming off Tommy John surgery and both are rehabbing. The Braves reportedly tried to sign Medlen to a two year deal but were unable to come to an agreement.

Should the Yankees take a chance on either one of the pitchers (or be greedy and sign both)?

First of all, let me take you back to 2003. Those were the days. The Yankees were coming off of another World Series appearance and were looking for some additional pitching depth. They gave the rehabbing Jon Lieber a two year contract.

The first year Lieber spent rehabbing from that arm injury. The second year? In 2004? 14-8 with a 4.33 ERA in 27 starts in an offensive era. Pretty good no?

The point is, the Yankees could grab either and sign them to a similar two year deal. If either can give the Yankees anything this year it would be considered a bonus.

Medlen is just 29 and won 15 games back in 2013. Beachy was 5-5 but with an ERA of 2.00 in 2012 before getting hurt and needing Tommy John surgery himself.

With the questions surrounding the Yankees starting staff, having depth is always a plus. Can CC Sabathia‘s knee hold up? Will Masahiro Tanaka‘s elbow? Can Michael Pineda stay healthy? We just don’t know.

A little extra depth can’t hurt and the Yankees will spend a little bit. Adding either one into the fold would be a great depth move for the team.
