Should The Yankees Pursue Max Scherzer?

Although Scott Boras is used to getting his clients what they want, the Yankees should stay away from signing Max Scherzer to a long term deal.

More from Yankees News

Sure, Scherzer´s value right now is tremendous, but the question is not what he is worth now but what he will be worth down the line. The Yankees should have learned their lesson by the deals they have given to CC Sabathia and Alex Rodriguez.

Sabathia is a consumate professional. No one could make a greater effort than he has made to overcome his injuries and return to the high-level form that he has set during his career. Yet, despite all of his determination, it is clear that the Yankees can learn a lesson from his signing.

As for Rodríguez, the facts speak for themselves. The more admissions that he makes, the more his performance deteriorates. While he  once seemed destined to become the greatest home run hitter in the history of the game, he now struggles just to find a position and make the Yankees lineup.

Sincé the year 2000, Scherzer is part of a small list of Cy Young Award winners who have attainerd the status of free agency. The list includes Sabathia, Zack Greinke and Barry Zito. The Yankees should avoid making a deal to pick up any of the others because they all do not offer significant long term contribution potential.

Of course, Boras insists that since Scherzer has had less stress on his arm, that he will be worth a long term deal in the long run. Just ask the the fans in Wahington and Miami if they agree. The way the game is going now, that only means that Scherzer is due for a significant injury. That is not to wish it on him, but no one can escape Father Time.
