The New York Yankees continue to quietly stockpile young international talent. According to Ben Badler of Baseball America, the team recently signed 16-year-old outfielder Bryan Emery. Emery was ranked the #23 international prospect, and the last of the top 30 ranked prospects still available on the market. It was quite a coup for GM Brian Cashman, as the Bombers signed exactly 1/3 of the top 30 international prospects this year.

Emery is a switch-hitter, but according to Badler, he’s been hitting exclusively from the left side over the past few months. Emery is a powerful, 6’3″ and a lean 190 lbs. He still has some room to grow into his frame, and has a solid outfield arm. In terms of what the young man can do with the bat, the term “easy, explosive power” was used by Badler when explaining what kinds of tools Emery possesses. The Yankees will end up paying double of whatever the agreement with Emery and his representative, Ivan Noboa brokered, due to the Yankees going hog wild on international spending this past season.

Due to MLB’s spending rules for international talent, the Yankees went beyond their bonus pool allocation, thus the higher percentage of tax on Emery’s contract. The team will only be allowed to spend $300,000 over the next two years as a result of spending so heavily this year.
