YGY Radio Show Rewind: Billy Sample Interview/Tulo Discussion

On this episode of the Yanks Go Yard Radio Show, brought to you by KNODA.com, I started off the show by talking about what has gone on during the past week with the Yankees on the Hot Stove. The two biggest moves that the team made were the re-signing of outfielder Chris Young to a one-year, $2.5 million deal to be the team’s fourth outfielder in 2015. The New York Yankees were also busy on the trade market as they dealt catcher Francisco Cervelli to the Pittsburgh Pirates for lefty reliever Justin Wilson. I give my take on why it is a good move for the Yankees to acquire yet another hard throwing lefty, who is solid against righties, for the bullpen. The other news is David Robertson is now a free agent as the Yankees’ closer this past season rejected a one-year, $15.3 million qualifying offer.

Our first of two guests on this week’s episode was former Yankees’ outfielder Billy Sample. Sample played in the Bronx back in 1985, when the team went 97-64 under both Yogi Berra and Billy Martin. Sample’s best season came in 1983 when he stole 44 bases for the Texas Rangers, the fifth highest total in the American League. Sample has been a player, a broadcaster/journalist, and is a director of a baseball movie called Reunion 108, which is set to be out on DVD soon. During this interview, I talked to Billy about his time in New York, who was the toughest pitcher to steal a base against, whether or not his perspective of the game changed when he became a broadcaster, and what the Yankees should do this winter. This includes a discussion on how he views Alex Rodriguez as a Major Leaguer. Be sure to give the Reunion 108 Facebook page a “like” by clicking here: Reunion 108 on Facebook.

After the interview with Billy, we shifted gears to talk about the shortstop that a lot of Yankees’ fans want to see in pinstripes next season. That shortstop is current Rockies’ player Troy Tulowitzki. Tulowitzki is currently under contract with Colorado for six more years at $118 million. To get some of the answers on Tulo, I talked with the editor of Rox Pile, Hayden Kane. Here are some of the topics that Hayden and I discussed:
