YGY Radio Show Rewind: Free Agent Discussion

On this episode of the Yanks Go Yard Radio Show, brought to you by KNODA.com, we started off the show by talking about David Robertson. The Yankees’ closer from this past season is currently mulling over a one-year, $15.3 million contract, which is the qualifying offer this offseason. Does Robertson take the deal or look for a long-term deal?

The other bit of Yankees’ news that occurred this week was more Alex Rodriguez drama. The story was reported on Wednesday about Rodriguez’s admission of steroid use to the DEA back in January. As Rodriguez’s name appears in the headline, it has to increase Chase Headley’s value for the Yankees to be the everyday third baseman.

More from Yankees News

The first guest on the show was Delia Enriquez, a writer over at Bronx Baseball Daily. We began the conversation by talking about her article about possible contracts that the Yankees could offer Robertson if he declines the qualifying offer and how far New York should go to try to bring back Robertson. We debated on whether or not New York would be taking the right approach if the report is true that they won’t pursue Pablo Sandoval, Jon Lester, Max Scherzer, and James Shields.

Then, Matt Snyder , a MLB writer for CBS Sports, came on the show to give his take on the Yankees’ possible free agent targets. Here are some of the topics that Matt and I talked about:

  • His thoughts on the qualifying offer system
  • Who could possibly accept their qualifying offer (Michael Cuddyer, Ervin Santana)?
  • Does Matt think a team will give Robertson a four-year deal in free agency?
  • New York with more issues in the rotation than people think?
  • Why I think the Washington Nationals would be the perfect fit for D-Rob
  • Should we buy the report that New York won’t go after the top free agents? Would it be a mistake if they went that route?
  • Matt predicts one of the big-name pitchers to New York: Which one is it?
  • Why the Yankees need to look at McCarthy’s career, not just second half of this past season
  • If New York isn’t going to spend the money on big free agents, should they use it to release A-Rod
