Halsey was selected by the Yankees in the eighth round of the 2002 amateur draft and made his big league debut on June 19th, 2004 in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. However, it was his third start would go down in history.

On July 1st of that year, Halsey took the mound at Yankee Stadium to take on their arch-rivals, the Boston Red Sox. He hurled 5.1 innings while allowing 2 runs on 4 hits. He left with the Yankees in the lead but didn’t get the win, as the Red Sox tied the game and force extra innings.

In the 12th inning with runners on second and third base, Derek Jeter made the famous catch that has come to be known as “the dive” on Trot Nixon‘s pop fly. The Yankees won the game 5-4.

Halsey will always be remembered for that start. In 88 games in pinstripes, Halsey finished up at 14-19.

After the 2004 season, Halsey was traded to the Diamondbacks along with young catching prospect Dioner Navarro and starter Javier Vazquez in exchange for future Hall Of Fame starter Randy Johnson.

Halsey spent only one season in Arizona before being traded to the Oakland Athletics. He is also the pitcher who gave up Barry Bonds‘ 714th career home run, tying him for second place all-time with former Yankees’ great, Babe Ruth.

He spent 3 years in the Major Leagues (2004-2006), but he bounced around the Minor Leagues for six more seasons afterwards, which included  a second stint in the Yankees organization in 2011.

All of us at Yanks Go Yard would like to extend our condolences to the Halsey family.
