Scorpions Go Down in AFL Action

It was a close one in the desert Tuesday. The Scottsdale Scorpions lost to the Saguaro Surprise 4-3 in the Arizona Fall League action. It wasn’t a very exciting day for the Yankees’ prospect who played as the Scorpions fell into last place in the AFL East Division.

The Surprise struck first and set the tone of the game in the second inning. They brought two across in the bottom of the second. They would be the only two runs Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Tom Harlan would allow, but they would be enough to drop him to 0-2 on the AFL season. Harlan would impressively strike out seven while walking none over his four innings of work. Yankees’ prospects Kyle Haynes and Caleb Cotham combined to shut down the game with a scoreless seventh and eighth inning. Haynes bounced back nicely after allowing his first two earned runs of the AFL season in his last game. His ERA sits at 2.35. Cotham, who struggled early in AFL action, is perhaps finally settling in with back-to-back scoreless appearances.

The Yankees’ prospects in the line-up did very little offensively on Tuesday. The Scorpions only mustered seven hits with the Baby Bombers accounting for two. First baseman and AFL MVP candidate, Greg Bird had the day off, but the Scorpions sure could have used the AFL league leader in home runs and RBI. Aaron Judge went 1-for-3 on the day and Tyler Austin put up a goose egg while striking out twice. Dante Bichette, Jr. was able to get involved in some of the action going 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored before being lifted for a pinch runner.

The loss drops the Scorpions to 9-10 on the season. Scottsdale takes on the Mesa Solar Sox Wednesday at 3:35PM EST. Starting pitchers and line-ups have not yet been announced.
