Yankees Fans Need To Stop Asking To Bring Don Mattingly Back…For Now

News breaking on Friday that Joe Maddon opted out of his contract with the Tampa Bay Rays makes Joe Maddon quite possibly the biggest free agent on the market. Is he going to the Cubs? Is he going to the Dodgers? Twins? Mets? Well both the Mets and Dodgers have come and said we are sticking with what we have.

There are all sorts of rumors how the Dodgers get Maddon followed by the Yankees bringing in Don Mattingly and firing Joe Girardi.

Can we stop with this please? It ain’t happening.

Back in 2008, the Yankees already chose Girardi over Mattingly. Why right now would anything change?

Would Mattingly have brought the Yankees to the playoffs over the past two years? Could anyone have? Probably not. The Yankees just weren’t built correctly for it and sustained too many injuries over the past two years and didn’t have enough depth to compensate for it.

I’ve already written about how Cashman should have been let go. He wasn’t. Instead, they got rid of other people around him with the “retirement” of Mark Newman and the letting go of a couple of coaches.

The fact that Maddon is out there, and the fact that Mattingly may end up being out there isn’t going to change anything.

Now, if Cashman makes changes to the players and the team again falls short of making the playoffs for a third straight year in 2015, then we can talk about Girardi being shown the door.

Until then, Mattingly isn’t coming here. Neither is Maddon. Girardi is going to be the manager in NY.

Stop it.
