Former Yankee Brian Roberts Retired

The Yankees starting middle infield from last year have hung up their spikes. First it was Derek Jeter, and now former Yankee infielder Brian Roberts announced his retirement from baseball.

Roch is right about one thing. He will always be an Oriole, because his time in pinstripes last year won’t be remembered too fondly.

Ironically, Roberts played in the most games he’s played in with the Yankees (91) since 2009. Roberts struggled on both ends of the ball last year.

He hit .237/.300/.360 with five homers, 21 RBI and seven steals. In those 91 games, he made 10 errors and had a WAR of 1.1.

Roberts was released when the Yankees made the Stephen Drew for Kelly Johnson trade on July 31.

Roberts was brought in with the idea that him and Johnson could give the Yankees enough production at second to help offset the loss of Robinson Cano, along with the other off-season acquisitions they made. Let’s just say we all know how that movie ended.

Roberts was a two-time All-Star, lead the AL in doubles twice and stolen bases once. From 2004-2009, he was one of the best second baseman in the game.

But concussions and other ailments took their toll, and after 2009, he barely played.

Kudos to Roberts on a great career and good luck to him in retirement.
