How Austin Romine May Have A Leg Up On Other Yankees Catchers

The one position that the New York Yankees have some pretty good depth in is at the catcher position.  We know about Brian McCann and Francisco Cervelli. We’ve seen John Ryan Murphy. We’ve all heard about Gary Sanchez for years. The Yankees could use Cervelli in a trade for something else that they need for next season.

That could leave Murphy competing with Austin Romine for the backup catcher spot next spring. Romine has had a reputation for being an excellent receiver while not being as good a hitter. There actually may be a way that Romine can have a leg up on the competition.

Romine sat down with NJ.com’s Brendan Kuty about how he began learning to play first base in AAA during last season. With the Yankees not really having a backup first baseman for most of the season, any positional versatility that someone off the bench can provide is an absolute bonus.

Romine was able to get into 13 games at first base next season for AAA Scranton.

The Yankees certainly won’t deal for a backup catcher with the depth they have and the fact that Romine can play another position it could make him a more viable candidate if they used Cervelli as trade bait.

Romine in AAA last year in 81 games hit .242/.300/.365 with six homers and 33 RBI.
