Yankees Beat Red Sox 3-2 In Series Opener
Though the Yankees’ fielded a team without any of their regulars, they managed to shut down the Red Sox and edge out a victory.
Boston struck in the second when Bryce Brentz singled home Allen Craig to give the Sox a 1-0 advantage. However, the lead wouldn’t last.
Francisco Cervelli brought the first Yankee run to the plate in the third with a one out single off of the “green monster” to drive in Eury Perez. Chris Young followed by singling Cervelli to second, bringing John Ryan Murphy to the plate.
Murphy grounded the first pitch of the at-bat to Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts who attempted to start an inning ending double play. Unfortunately for Sox fans, second baseman Mookie Betts threw the ball past first baseman Allen Craig. This brought Cervelli around to score and gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead.
The Yankees would add to their lead in the sixth, when Zealous Wheeler brought Murphy home on a fly ball to right field.
The Red Sox wouldn’t go quietly.
Chris Capuano pitched a solid game for the Yankees, giving up just one run in 6.2 innings pitched. He was replaced by struggling righty Shawn Kelley with power hitting outfielder Rusney Castillo due up.
Castillo crushed Kelley’s first offering over the green monster in left field to cut the Yankees’ lead to 3-2.
However, Adam Warren would silence the Sox bats in the eighth and David Robertson would redeem himself in the ninth by finishing the Red Sox with ease.
