DOA: Yankees Eliminated After Loss To Orioles
After a season of uncertainty, we now know one thing; the season will end on September 28th. The Yankees were officially eliminated on Wednesday as the Orioles beat up the Yankees 9-5.
The outcome was a little bit surprising as the “Bombers” had a 3-0 lead into the fourth, thanks to an RBI double by Mark Teixeira, and solo home runs off the bats of Stephen Drew and Chase Headley. However, once Shane Greene took the mound, disaster struck.

The inning began with back-to-back singles from Nelson Cruz and Steve Clevenger, followed by a walk to Kelly Johnson to load the bases two batters later.
The next batter, Ryan Flaherty, stroked a two-run double into right field that sent Johnson to third. The Yankees lead was down to one.
Greene mercifully managed to strike out Caleb Joseph for the second out, giving the nervous fans a slight reason to hope. It wouldn’t last long. Nick Markakis would proceed to send a two-strike slider into the outfield, and bring Johnson and Flaherty to the plate.
The life had been taken from the Stadium.
The Orioles would add two more in the inning, and would never relinquish control. The only other hint of Yankees life came in the eighth (by this point the Orioles had scored three more runs to turn the game into a blowout) when Headley singled and was brought around to score on Mark Teixeira’s home run. It still appeared meaningless.
Francisco Cervelli would then walk on four pitches. Buck Showalter decided call upon the lefty T.J. McFarland to pitch to Stephen Drew.
Joe Girardi then decided to send rookie utility man Jose Pirela (a righty) to pinch hit for Drew. It turned out to be a wise move, as Pirela poked a single through the right side of the infield for a single.
Now, with two runners on, Chris Young had a chance to cut the Orioles lead to one.
Unfortunately he would bounce the eighth Darren O’Day offering to Ryan Flaherty, who would throw him out at first base.
The Yankees would go down quietly in the ninth.
Thursday is Derek Jeter‘s big day as it marks his final game at Yankees Stadium. Rain is on the schedule, so we very may have well seen the last of the Yankees’ Captain.
