No this isn’t a headline from 1994-2012. Chris Capuano was knocked around and out early, but no matter, the Yankees did something they rarely do this year; rally for a victory. The Yankees offense fought back for an 8-5 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Ben Zobrist led off with a single and Evan Longoria walked. Wil Myers doubled in a run. After a walk, two singles by Yunel Escobar and Logan Forsythe brought in two more. Ryan Hanigan‘s sac fly made it 4-0 out of the gate.

Brian McCann hit his 18th homer in the bottom half of the frame to get the run back. McCann drove in two more in the third after Chris Young and Jacoby Ellsbury reached on a walk and a hit.

Young then tied the game with his first Yankee homer and ninth of the year off Jake Odorizzi.

McCann started a rally in the fifth being hit by a pitch and then Mark Teixeira tripled (!) him in to give the Yankees the lead for good. Chase Headley brought in Tex with a single.

The Yankees did another thing they rarely do this season in adding some insurance runs late in the game. Ichiro Suzuki and Young got RBI doubles.

Longoria’s solo homer off Esmil Rogers in the ninth broke the bullpen’s 29 inning scoreless streak.

The rubber game of the series is tomorrow night at 7:05. Alex Cobb will face Michael Pineda.
