The Yankees made a trade for Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew today before the deadline. Drew who was on the Sox championship team in 2013 was a free agent until May when Boston signed him for 10.2 million. It is no secret that the Yankees needed to address their middle infield situation with Brian Roberts and others not playing up to expectations. This was the first trade between the teams since 1997.
The Yankees send Kelly Johnson to the Red Sox. Johnson was hitting .219 with six homers and 22 RBI with the Yankees.
Stephen Drew was hitting .176 with four homers and 11 RBI for the Red Sox. A career shortstop, Drew should find himself playing second base for the rest of the season.
