Brian Roberts has been designated for assignment today following the Yankees trading for Stephen Drew. Roberts, 36, struggled in New York, batting .237 with an OBP of .300 and just 21 RBI through 91 games.
Health was a concern the entire year for Roberts, who had played a total of 192 games from 2010 – 2013 as a member of the Baltimore Orioles. However, he actually kept himself in the lineup and healthy. Unfortunately, his play at the plate doomed him. His play in the field decreased tremendously in recent weeks as well.
Roberts was due a $250,000 bonus if he had just two more plate appearances this season. For how little he was contributing, it’s a quarter million well saved by the Yankees front office. Expect newcomer Stephen Drew to replace Roberts as the daily second baseman.
