Headley Gives Yankees The Win In Debut

Chase Headley can only do so much. He’s new in town and got to the park during the game. He came in and finally ended this thing, after starting the day in Chicago, winning the game 2-1 in 14 innings in a game they had to have.

The Yanks first chance came in the ninth, when Derek Jeter doubled (and set the franchise mark for doubles with 535) and Jacoby Ellsbury was intentionally walked. Carlos Beltran would ground into a double play to end the inning.

In the 11th, Brett Gardner and Jeter walked with two out, but Ellsbury grounded out to end it.

The best chance came in the 12th. Beltran singled and went to second on a wild pitch. Brian McCann then got his second pop fly single in three days, this time to left. Ichiro Suzuki, who came in for an injured Kelly Johnson in the top of the 11th bunted them over. Ryan Feierband walked Brian Roberts intentionally to load the bases. In came Scott Baker who had a 3-0 count on Francisco Cervelli, got it to 3-2 and then stung one that Adrian Beltre grabbed. Headley then grounded out.

The Rangers broke through in the 13th when J.P. Arencibia hit his third homer of the year off David Huff.

Joakim Soria came in and tried to get the save. Gardner led off with a double. Jeter bunted him to third and Ellsbury tied it with a hard single to right. Beltran singled, but McCann would ground into a double play to end inning.

The Yanks would end it in the 14th. Roberts led off with a double. He moved to third on a single by Cervelli and Headley would then follow with his first hit in pinstripes to win it.

It doesn’t get easier for a struggling offense as they face Yu Darvish tomorrow night at 7:05. David Phelps will go for the Yankees.
