According to Jon Heyman, the New York Yankees have completed a trade with the Padres for third baseman Chase Headley. Yangervis Solarte and Rafael De Paula will be heading to San Diego to complete the deal. The Padres will also kick in one million dollars.
Headley is hitting .229 with seven home runs and thirty-two RBI this season. Despite not putting up huge numbers like he did in 2012, he is a significant upgrade over Solarte or Kelly Johnson. Headley will be a free agent at season’s end.
After starting out the season on fire, Solarte’s average sits at .254 and he recently got recalled from Triple-A. De Paula has spent 2014 in Tampa, making twenty appearances (seventeen starts). He is 6-5 with a 4.15 ERA and 105 strikeouts in eighty-nine innings. Despite the ERA, De Paula was considered one of the Yankees’ up-and-coming arms. This should be a positive shake up for a team struggling to score runs.
