The Yankees have officially placed outfielder/designated hitter Carlos Beltran on the 7-day concussion list.
The move comes one day after Beltran broke his nose during batting practice, when the ball went off the batting cage net, and struck him in the face.
Beltran had previously been nursing a sore knee before the freak injury occurred. Beltran, a switch-hitter, is batting .216 with nine homers and 28 RBIs this season.
Yangervis Solarte was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre to take Beltran’s place on the roster, and is playing third base against the Indians tonight. Solarte was a huge part of the Yankees’ offense for the first two months of the season, but cooled off considerably in June, forcing the Yankees to send him down. Solarte went 12-20 (.600) with 5 RBI in 5 games with the Railriders (the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate). The Yankees are hopeful he can reclaim that lightning in a bottle once again.
