Even though the Yankees lost out on Jeff Samardzija/Jason Hammel mania, they have still been in talks with the cubs about at least one of their many top shortstop prospects.  New York obviously has a glaring need at short stop with Derek Jeter retiring, but the Cubs have said they plan on holding on to their talented foursome.

The Cubs recently added another  top shortstop, Addison Russell, to the already talented trio of Javier Baez, Arismendy Alcantara, and Starlin Castro. However, only Castro has logged major league experience under his belt. Baez strikes out at a very high clip. hurting his chances of promotion. He struck out in over 30.5% of his plate appearances in Double A.

Javier Baez seems to be the most obtainable of the prospects for the Yankees.  He has great power and may end up moving to third base. As mentioned above he strikes out a lot, but he does move pretty well and his bat plays better at the hot corner. Also remember, he is just 21 years old. Alacantara may be a little harder to pry from the cubs, who think very highly of him as evidenced by him being called up to the majors today.

Although veteran for prospect trades are rare,  the Cubs may be willing to take one because one thing they don’t need to do is get younger. This is something for Yankees fans to keep their eyes on.
