BREAKING NEWS: Aceves Suspended 50 Games for Marijuana

Well, there is one way to get Alfredo Aceves off the Yankees. According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, Aceves has been suspended 50 games for testing positive for marijuana. It is yet another low light in a rough season for the once reliable right-hander.

Aceves was demoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre early last month after imploding in a June 2nd appearance against the Seattle Mariners. The four earned runs he allowed in his two innings pitched that day brought his ERA up to 6.52 to go along with an uninspiring 1-2 record and an ugly 1.40 WHIP. Aceves was sent down and was then removed from the 40-man roster.

The 31-year-old righty was brought back this season in hopes that the Yankees could recapture the magic of his first tenure with the team. Aceves went 14-1 over that three-year stint and was key out of the bullpen during the 2009 World Championship run. After leaving town for Boston and compiling a 10-2 record in his first year with the Red Sox, the wheels became to come off for Aceves. Aceves was released by the Red Sox this past winter, and couldn’t even last two months with the Orioles after they signed him. The Yankees scooped him up the day after the Orioles released him.

Unlike Major League Baseball, the Minor League Baseball system tests for more than just performance-enhancing drugs. In the minors, players are tested for “drugs of abuse” such as marijuana, heroin, etc. Since returning to the minors, Aceces has an ERA over 6 in 10 appearances. His suspension is effective immediately.
