Today the New York Yankees have agreed to terms with one of the top international prospects, Nelson Gomez. Gomez is a shortstop out of the Dominican Republic.

Most prospect analysts agree that Gomez is one of the best international prospects available.  He is ranked number 2 at mlb.com. Gomez has a large frame, and has good power at the plate, and also a great arm. His tools could place him anywhere on the diamond. Gomez is a good athlete and could actually stick at shortstop if he glove remains solid.

The Yankees have also signed another shortstop, Dermis Garcia. He is a tall, skinny guy right now (6’2″, 162 lbs.), but he has a great power grade projection at 65. He is also a pretty good contact grade at 55. Garcia is not the most athletic prospect, and may have to make a move to third, and also needs work in the field, with only a 45 grade. Garcia’s value is in his bat at this time in his career.

The third player on this list is Venezuelan shortstop Wilkerman Garcia. He is an athletic guy with a fluid throwing motion, and good hands on defense. He is projected as a true shortstop, but could also play second or even third because of his great arm. With the bat, Wilkerson is a switch-hitter and is more of a contact guy at this point, and does not have huge power projection. Wilkerman is the #14 projected international player in the class.

The Yankees were expected to blow past their  $2,193,100 bonus allocation, and the signing of Gomez ($2.25 mil) surpasses that on its own.
