Yankees Select Mark Payton with Pick #212

Mark Payton is a 5′ 8″ 190-pound left-handed outfielder from the University of Texas. Payton played centerfield in college, but he probably will not be able to stick there in pro ball because he lacks elite speed to play the position. What Payton does have is a really good offensive game. He ended his career with a 99-game on-base streak.

He has a good eye at the plate and is a good contact guy. With not much power, Payton depends on solid line drives and gap power to get on base. He hit .318 with 1 home run and 36 RBI in 2014. Payton has a solid career average of .319, 6 home runs and 119 RBI in his 4-year career.

Mark Payton will probably end up as a guy who plays a few positions as a pro, most likely a corner outfielder or a middle infielder. Either way, the Yankees are getting a gritty little player with good contact, speed and a ton of upside.

Dude, Payton is a left-handed outfielder so no middle infield for him. The rest of the scouting is accurate except that despite not having “elite” speed, he’s a ballplayer and can play Centerfield in the big leagues at an elite level, Payton has a plus arm, and he’s a good base stealer. He’s not as fast as Brett Gardner but he’s better at every other tool, Payton will especially surprise with his power and take advantage of the Bronx right field short porch. For a ceiling, I project him as a Robinson Cano in Centerfield, a prospect who everyone thought was too slow and too small but ends up hitting .300 with 15+ HR’s and playing CF at a Curtis Granderson level. This is an accurate scouting report, just look at his minor league numbers so far. I’ve followed this kid since high school and the Yanks made a great pick. Too bad they stiffed him with a $45k signing, $133k below slot, cheap, greedy bastards. I hope Payton bleeds them them dry in the future.
