Just when the Yankees were getting some stability back soon, Shawn Kelley has suffered a setback in his return from injury. Kelley threw a catch session Monday and his lower back issue appeared to possibly return. His back was stiff after the session, and Girardi has shut him down.
Kelley had about a one week timetable to return. He was scheduled to throw another round of catch today, followed by a bullpen session Thursday, and a rehab game in the minors Saturday. The Yankees have been fortunate that others in the bullpen like Dellin Betances have been absolutely rocking since his injury on May 6th. However, Yankees’ starters are hard to find and the bullpen needs all hands on deck moving forward.
The move to shut down Kelley is more precautionary than anything, as he already had an MRI that revealed nothing major. With any luck, this is a temporary move that Kelley can come back from in the immediate future. With all the other injuries hitting the Yankees, they could definitely use a break.
