On Tuesday, Yankees’ minor league catcher Peter O’Brien was named the player of the week in the Florida State League. This was the first award given in 2014 and the stats for this award range from April 3rd to April 13th.

O’Brien was one of the players that people were buzzing about in Tampa during spring training with his ability to hit mammoth home runs in batting practice.  Over the course of the first ten days of the season, O’Brien has not missed a beat. The Tampa Yankees’ catcher hit  .333 with four home runs and six RBI. 6 of his 13 hits over that span went for extra bases.

It is unknown what role O’Brien could have in the organization in future years due to the stockpile the team has at catcher. That being said, if he continues to hit like has to start this season, the team will definitely find a place for him in future years. The Tampa Yankees (Class-A Affiliate) have started the season 7-4 and are currently on a 2-game winning streak. Congratulations to Peter!
