On a night that was “Johnny Wholestaff” as Joe Girardi called it, the bats couldn’t help out the pitching as the Yankees were shut out by the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 6-0.

The defense didn’t help out David Phelps who was pitcher number two tonight in the second inning. Kelly Johnson committed two errors, one on Dominic Brown’s grounder and one on Carlos Ruiz‘s. Brown was thrown out at home on Ruiz’s grounder but Ruiz was moved to second. Bobby Abreu (yes that Bobby Abreu) followed with an RBI single.

Vidal Nuno was next in the third and served up back to back homers from Ryan Howard and Marlon Byrd.

Shane Greene came in in the sixth and struggled. Byrd doubled and came around to score on Brown’s single. Brown would steal second and score on Ruiz’s bloop single to right.

Matt Daley was the last pitcher on this night, and he too gave up a run. With one out, Edgar Duran and John Mayberry singled. Tony Gwynn Jr flew out to a sliding Yangervis Solarte and Duran would score.

The Yanks will head to Dunedin to take on the Toronto Blue Jays. Chris Leroux will take on R.A. Dickey
