According to Peter Gammons on his blog, the New York Yankees might have some interest in trading for Houston Astros third baseman Matt Dominguez. Why the Astros would even be willing to listen to offers is beyond me, as they have arguably the deepest minor league system in all of baseball, but the hot corner is not stocked with plentiful options.

Dominguez, 24, in just under 600 at-bats, blasted 21 home runs and drove in 77 while slugging .403. He also struck out 96 times. Defensively, Dominguez will never win a Gold Glove, committing 16 errors in 431 chances. He’s solid enough, and it would be interesting to see what the Astros’ asking price would be to part with the powerful young third baseman. If the Yankees were to pull the trigger on such a deal, it would alleviate the issue of having to play Kelly Johnson at the hot corner, and he along with Brian Roberts could be a natural platoon at second base. Gammons’ source is an unnamed scout. Stay tuned…
