Third Base

Kevin Youkilis was signed when word came out that Alex Rodriguez would start the season on the DL. However, he predictably got hurt too. Jayson Nix and David Adams took over at third and were -7.9 and -9.9 runs on offense, respectively. I really hope the Alex Rodriguez is not suspended because he is their best option at the position. A slash line of .250/.340/.420 would be a huge upgrade at third. No one on the current 40-man roster could put up that line while playing third base. Kelly Johnson could also take a number of at-bats at the position when A-Rod is DH. Mark Reynolds might be an option at the position if A-Rod is suspended. However, I don’t think he is good enough defensively at the position and it would be a slight offensive downgrade. A healthy and eligible A-Rod can still put together a big-league at bat. He will strike out a lot and walk a lot. The power isn’t what it used to be, but he will still get on base. It wouldn’t be hard to get a 3-win upgrade at third base with Rodriguez and Johnson playing most of the time.
