The New York Yankees have Brendan Ryan, Derek Jeter and Eduardo Nunez at shortstop. What’s one more right? Here’s a tweet from MLB Network’s Peter Gammons on the Stephen Drew free agent situation.

What Yankee clarity does he speak of? Is he referring to the Alex Rodriguez is he suspended/is he not? Will the Yankees use the money they may be holding on to for Masahiro Tanaka to put towards Drew? Does Scott Boras want to hold off, so Drew doesn’t sign with Jay-Z too?

Whatever the case may be, I’m not exactly sure how much room they have on the roster for yet another middle infielder. Drew has only played shortstop throughout his entire major league career. You already have three potential players for the position, two guys at second in Kelly Johnson and Brian Roberts AND Dean Anna who could be a super utility type of player.

The acquisition of Drew would have to lead to another move or two. Also, why sign another infielder when you need at least one more starting pitcher and a couple more relievers (and maybe a closer)

The Yankees have holes to fill on the roster and Stephen Drew isn’t the kind of player who can help fix those holes. He’s a bit more of a luxury item at this point.  If Drew is willing to possibly play some third and Rodriguez is suspended, he could certainly help, but right now, the fit would be a bit odd.
